First and Second Grade News – June 5, 2015

Dear Families,
We have only 6 ½ school days left of the year!  The students have worked hard this week to complete many assessments and wrap up a variety of different projects.  Next week we will finish writing narrative books and making Eric Carle-like illustrations for these books.  We will also begin the classroom cleaning process, so please make sure students have backpacks to bring home all their classroom treasures.
It is “house cleaning” time and we would ask that you please carefully check your home for any books or supplies that belong here at school.  Specifically, we are looking for classroom books, library books, and coins that students may have earned for working hard, being safe, or being kind.  We will also be collecting students’ book bags at the end of the year.

Important Upcoming Dates:
LAST ECO FOR ALL 1st and 2nd Graders - Tuesday, June 9 @ 1:00-3:00
Step Up Day – Wednesday, June 10 9:00-9:45am

First and Second Grade News

May 22nd, 2015

Dear Families,

We had a fantastic hike yesterday up to Chickering Bog.  All of us learned so much new plant, tree and bog information from our research and our amazing chaperones.  Thank you to all of you who took the day to join us!  For those who took Tuesday and couldn’t make it yesterday, our apologies.  The weather could not have been better for keeping the bug count down.

We have most permission slips back for our two fieldtrips this coming week. If you are joining us for the Montshire Museum trip please be here by 8:50.  We will be back to school by 3:15.

We are winding down in all of our core subjects.  Students are busy working on their “image making” narrative stories.  We will be assessing students in the coming two weeks in reading, writing and math.  Our students have all made excellent progress this year!  Please keep up the reading this summer.

On that note, please look for any school books at home especially classroom texts for reading.  We depend on these teaching materials.  Thanks!

First and Second Grade News - April 10, 2015

Dear Families,
We would like to thank all of you for coming to parent teacher conferences last week with thoughtful comments about your children and positive words for us.  We greatly appreciate your flexibly with the scheduling, it made it possible for us to see all of you in two days!  The weather has not been very “spring” like and we have been dealing with many sick kiddos still.  We are hoping next week brings warmer weather and better health so that everyone can enjoy their April Break!
Students have been working hard to gather research about their ECO animals and compile it into a report.  We are each becoming experts on our own animals and are getting excited to show our knowledge off!  Students will be sharing their finished animal reports (hopefully) and the dioramas they made at an open house the week after break.  We would love for parents and friends of first and second grade students to join on the afternoon of May 1st to view this great work!  If you cannot make it that day please know that we plan to have these reports on display during the concert and art show later in May.
*A quick note from Mrs. Raynor for 1st Grade Families:  First graders have begun to learn o’clock times on an analog clock.  I have encouraged them to wear analog watches to school if they have time, so if you see an increased interest in having a watch this is why.  Please know that it is not required for first graders to have an analog watch, but it sure does help them learn how to tell time!*
Important Upcoming Dates:  *VARIETY SHOW TONIGHT 4/10 @ 6pm*
ECO: 4/14 (Raynor), 4/28 (Levangie)
April Break: 4/20-4/24
Animal Reports Open House: 5/1 @ 1:30-2:30
Potential Field Trip Dates: Chickering Bog/Fen hike – 5/19 (rain date 5/21), K-3 Montshire Museum- 5/27 (confirmed), and u-32 book buddies and science museum – 5/29 (confirmed).  *We will not be going to the ECHO Center this year.*
Sincerely,

Randilee and Lisa

1st and 2nd Grade News March 13, 2015

Dear Families,
1st graders are diving into a unit on measurement and have been learning the importance of using a standard unit of measure.  This week I am asking 1st grade students to complete some measurement homework.  Students should 1. choose something to measure, 2. measure it in as many ways as you can: height, width, length, weight, volume, temperature, time, 3. Record their results, and 4. include at least one comparison: “it is taller than….” or “heavier than…”
2nd graders have begun learning about fractions.  They will learn 1/2, 1/4, and 1/3 and how equal shares can have different shapes.  Students will learn many new math words during this unit including, half, halves, third, thirds, fourth, fourths, quarters, whole, numerator, and denominator.
In Reading Workshop first graders are comparing non-fiction and fiction stories and are doing word work with initial and final digraphs and blends.  In second grade students are meeting in non-fiction clubs to discuss selected topics together and ask better questions and are working on contractions.  All first and second graders have started researching their ECO animals and are planning their books.
Mrs. Raynor’s class has picked to have a Pajama Day as their next celebration for filling their classroom treasure chest with coins!  Pajama Day will happen for Mrs. Raynor’s class on Tuesday, March 17, 2015.  For that day, students can wear their pajamas to school, they are asked to make sure their choice of pajamas is appropriate for school and warm.  Students are asked to wear regular soled shoes not soft slippers that day in case of a fire drill or other emergency that might happen.
It’s hard to believe but Parent Teacher Conferences are just around the corner!  We have set aside Thursday, April 2 and half of the day Friday, April 3, 2015 to meet with 1st and 2nd grade families.  We will be sending green conference forms home today in folders that will have a time slot we have selected for you.  We know that some of these times just will not work, but encourage you to be as flexible as you can be and remember that we are trying to schedule 31 families into these two days and will be working very hard those days to make the scheduling magic happen.  Please return these green conference forms to school as soon as possible so we can finalize the schedule for those two days.
PLEASE HELP YOUR CHILD REMEMBER TO RETURN THEIR BOOK BAGS.
Things to Remember:
*Mrs. Raynor’s Class PJ Day Celebration – Tuesday, 3/17 *ECO Dates – 3/17 (Ms. Levangie’s class)
*Beach Day – Monday, 3/30      *Parent Teacher Conferences – Thursday, 4/2 and Friday, 4/3
Sincerely,
Randilee and Lisa

Happy New Year!
Wow, what a cold week it has been!  We are so glad it has warmed up a bit and students will be able to head off on their first Fun Fitness Friday (FFF).  Please remember that we will not have ECO for the month of January, we will start up again in the month of February.
This week we have been busy with new units of learning and some assessments.  Students have begun to learn about sound in science and are looking forward to creating their own instruments as part of this unit.  In math both classes, students have started learning about geometry and have enjoyed exploring geoboards.  In writing, students have been working on writing a small moment from their holiday break.   During reading, first grade students have been reviewing strategies and second grade students have been participating in fiction books clubs.  All students have been and will continue to have their reading skills assessed; it is important for all students to be at school so they do not miss this significant testing.
PLEASE HELP YOUR CHILD REMEMBER TO RETURN THEIR BOOK BAGS.

December 5, 2014

Dear Families,
Wow, it is already December!  We have a busy month ahead full of great learning opportunities, singing, showing generosity, and just having fun.  1st and 2nd grade students have begun singing holiday songs together every morning to kick off the holiday season.  We are impressed at what good singers they all are!  We are hoping to put together a trip to the Woodridge Rehabilitation and Nursing Home in Berlin this month to share our great singing voices with some of the residents there.

This month there will not be a new math game sent home because it is short and busy month.  However, all students are working on money in one way or another; it would be great practice for them to count any coins they could.  First graders are working to know all coin names and their values, while second graders are working to be able to add multiple coins together to find their value.

In Reading Workshops we have launched our non-fiction units and both first and second graders are diving in and loving it!  We are working on “How To” books in both first and second grade Writing Workshops.  We have started our new science and social studies unit on light and how cultures around the world celebrate with light at this time of the year.  If you have any expertise or knowledge about a holiday and would like to come and share with our students we would all greatly appreciate it!
We will once again have ECO together with both 1-2 classes on December 23rd, more details about the plan for the day will be coming your way.

Dear Families,

Fall is here.  We’ve lucked out with the weather and have been able to get outside even on the rainy days. Our students have been writing what they know about fall and are finishing up “small moment” stories in first and second grade “Writing Workshop”.

Ms. Levangie’s class had a great time in E.C.O. on Tuesday.  Mrs. Raynor’s class will have E.C.O. next week.  Mrs. Raynor’s class had a class celebration while Ms. Levangie’s class had E.C.O. and Ms. Levangie’s class plans to have a class celebration this Tuesday.  Students chose to wear pajamas, bring a favorite stuffed animal and watch Fantastic Mr. Fox (after having read the book).  This is a P.G. movie so please see the permission slip below.  The students who have seen this film tell me it’s fine but I’ll preview it this weekend.  Let me know if you have any objections.  We are sending this permission slip home for ALL parents to sign for future use.  We will let you know what videos we would be showing at school.

Thanks for helping your student remember to bring his/her bookbag back to school Mondays.  Students are reporting that they are reading to adults at home.  Great!!

Conferences are scheduled for the second week of November.  We will be offering many additional times outside of the two half-days scheduled so that we can accommodate everyone.  Mrs. Raynor and I plan to have conferences together so you can speak with both of us about your child.  We’ll send a sign-up out next week.

August 25, 2014
Hello 1st and 2nd Grade Families,
Welcome to a new school year at Calais Elementary School.  My name is Mrs. Raynor and I will be your child’s homeroom teacher this year. I am thrilled that your child is in my class this year!  I am very excited to get started. I hope you have had an enjoyable summer with your family.  I am looking forward to getting to know your child.  First and Second grade is an incredible adventure, filled with wonderful activities and experiences. We will have fun with science experiments and math investigations; we’ll make new friends, write stories, read fantastic books, and learn how to be a much more independent learner!
In our school, learning is a team effort, and you and I have a common goal…to help your child become an independent, joyful learner. To do this, I will utilize every available minute of our day to enrich your child’s learning.  Ms. Lavengie and I will also send homework which supports classroom instruction, send classroom newsletters to keep you informed of our activities, and offer a blog (www.mrsraynors.blogspot.com) with classroom, building, and district information, news, and links. As for your support, I would suggest helping your child find ways to read as often as possible, accompany them to our school activities, call or email when you have questions, concerns, or just want to visit, and finally, support them during the various challenges of becoming an independent student.
I am a firm believer in keeping a strong, open line of communication between home and school.  After all, we have something so special in common; your child!  You are your child’s first teacher and you know him or her better than anyone else in the world.  I would love to start the year out with a glimpse of who your child really is.  What makes him or her so amazing?  What does he or she struggle with?  What are his or her hobbies and special talents? I am asking you to write to me about your child in a million words or less. J  If we were to sit down for 20 minutes over tea, what would you want to share with me about your child?  This information is confidential and is for me only.  It gives me a whole new understanding into who your child is and what makes him or her tick.  For example, if I know that Sally loves to draw, I might be able to have her use her talents on a class project.  If I know Jonny is terrified of spiders, I can be sensitive to his fears.  Yes, I will learn a lot about your child from our time together, but I would love to hear your input.
Please know that I am not judging your writing and this is not a test.  I don’t care about spelling or grammar.  I care about what you have to say.  If you feel more comfortable, have your child help with the writing!  Make this a team effort.  Remember it can be as long or short as you want!
This week and the upcoming weeks we will be focused on learning the routines of our classroom as well as the expectations for our classroom community.  We will stay in our homeroom classrooms for the first week and will begin to transition between math and reading classrooms the second week of school.  We will create classroom rules, get to know each other well, play games inside and outside, as well as discuss our hopes and dreams for the school year.
The Home/School folder will typically be sent home on Fridays, however if there are important papers that must be sent home sooner you may see it earlier in the week.  Included in the folder today is information about the ECO program as well as some important school paperwork.  ECO is something new we will be experiencing this year!  Ms. Levangie and I will be rotating sessions every other Tuesday with our leader Alex Rob.  Our Class will start on September 30.  If you would like to help out with ECO please fill out the volunteer form and send it back to school.  If I send the Home/School folder home please empty it out and send it back the next school day.  Eventually, we will also be sending students with book bags and math homework, but don’t expect that until October.
If you would like to contact me with any important information about your child you can call me at school at 454-7777, ext 312 or talk with me in person.  You can also email, but please know that I will have limited time to check and respond to emails.  Also, check out our blog mrsraynors.blogspot.com for some great photos of the students here at school.
Thank you so much for trusting me with your child this year and thank you for taking the time to tell me about him or her!

School will be ending on this day at 12:30.  Students will receive their year books that day and have time to sign them.  Students will also enjoy a slideshow in the gym at 11:30!
I would like to celebrate our summer birthdays on Tuesday, June 10th during snack.  If you child has a summer birthday we would love for you to send in an early birthday treat on that day!

Supplies we are still in need of for our last week of school fun include:
-9 bandana of any color other than blue
-5 golf balls
-1 bag of cotton balls
-2 cereal boxes of the same variety (just the boxes no cereal)
Thanks again for your help!

And for some news about what has been going on in the classroom……
(This edition brought to you by Avery, Sophia, Annabelle, and Alex.)
Science:  In science we have been working on land and water, our garden – pumpkins and our seed germination books.  In our seed germination books we have been recording things about our plants.  In our garden we have pumpkins and they are growing a lot.  In land and water we are making a land and water diorama.  That’s what we are doing in science.

Literacy:  2nd grade is having literacy night Wednesday, June 4th.  We have been starting to prepare for literacy night, like having fix-ups on our prompts.  Mrs. Raynor is testing our reading skills.  We want to be great readers when we are bigger.

Math:  In math we are talking about even and odd.  We are learning how even and odd work, like an even plus and even equals and even.  Like 6 + 6 = 12.  And an odd plus an odd equals an even.  And an odd plus and even equals an odd.  Like 11 + 12 = 23.  Me and some other kids are learning multiplication.  I only know easy ones like 1 x 1 and 2 x 5.  We all are working really hard to learn multiplication!

Count Down:  This week we have started a balloon count down and we started it on Wednesday, May 28th, 2014.  So each day until the end of the school year there is a balloon.  In each balloon there is a surprise for the day, like no shoes in the classroom or use marker to finish your work instead of pencil.

Have a great weekend! – Mrs. Raynor
