Dear Families,

Hopefully we’ll all be getting some outside time this week whether you’re flying south or waiting for the sap to run.  We finished our unit on sound and have the instruments displayed in the hallway along with “How To” books and reports.  The students have worked hard this month and both classes have earned celebrations for today.   The first and second graders led the all school Morning Meeting today and did a great job!  Please check out all the wonderful writing first and second graders are doing when you come for Town Meeting!

We will be launching our Science and Informational writing unit after the break.  Students will be writing reports about their individual ECO animals along with other writing about ecosystems.

In Reading Workshop we will be reading across genres in first grade and exploring different texts on the same subject.  The second graders will be deepening their knowledge in non-fiction reading as they work in reading clubs for the month of March.

In Math first graders will be diving into a measurement unit and continue learning strategies for solving addition facts.  The second graders will begin a fraction unit, I will introduce the concept of halves, thirds, and fourths, and will continue to practice their problem solving skills.

Dates to Remember:

Fun Fitness Friday – March 6th
Pi Night – Thursday, March 12th, 6-7pm
ECO – 3/10 Raynor, 3/17 Levangie

Have a wonderful break!

Best,

Lisa and Randilee

February 12, 2015
Dear Parents of First & Second Grade Students,

I am excited to announce that I am pregnant and my family of three will be growing to four. My intention is to work until the end of the school year; as the baby is due to arrive in the beginning of July.  I will be taking a year leave of absence to be at home with my family.  In the meantime, I am excited to keep working hard alongside your students every day.

The teacher assigned to take over the class in my absence is not known at this point, but we will be working very hard to find a year-long substitute who is a good fit for the first and second graders.  Please keep an eye out for communication from the office regarding the search process, including a call for parent volunteers.

I am planning to discuss the upcoming changes with your children before the break.   I hope that our conversations will offer children, especially our first graders, reassuring information that will help them make the easiest possible transition to a new teacher next year.  If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me here at school.

Thank you so much for your support.

Sincerely,

Randilee Raynor
